Kinetic Simulations of Instabilities and Particle Acceleration in Cylindrical Magnetized Relativistic Jets

Relativistic magnetized jets, such as those from AGN, GRBs and XRBs, are susceptible to current- pressure-driven MHD instabilities that can lead particle acceleration non-thermal radiation. Here we investigate the development of these through 3D kinetic simulations cylindrically symmetric equilibria involving toroidal magnetic fields with electron-positron pair plasma. Generalizing recent treatments by Alves et al. (2018) Davelaar (2020), consider a range initial structures in which force due field is balanced combination forces axial gas pressure. We argue energy limit identified finite duration fast dissipation phase. find rather minor role electric parallel local acceleration. In all investigated cases kink mode arises central core region growth timescale consistent predictions linearized models. case gas-pressure-balanced (Z-pinch) profile, identify weak pinch well outside jet core. modes important for relativistic regions where sufficient pressure produced other mechanisms.
